Danny H. Hughes, 78, passed away at home on April 21, 2026.
He was born on June 30, 1947, in Somerset, Kentucky, to the late Leslie Ray Hughes and Lillie Frances Redmond Hughes. On June 3, 1967, he married Donita Kell Hughes and together they built a life rooted in hard work, family and perseverance.
Danny was a proud United States Army veteran who served during the Vietnam War and was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany.
Danny was a prominent figure in the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and a lifelong horseman. He owned and operated his own stables for more than 50 years and built a name that was known and respected far beyond Kentucky. Throughout his career, Danny won at the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, was named
Kentucky Trainer of the Year multiple times, was inducted into the Tennessee Walking Horse Hall of Fame and trained several World Grand Champions. He was also co- owner of J&H Implement Company and was known as a strong businessman, a dedicated provider and a man people respected.
He enjoyed horse shows, golfing with his friends, deer hunting and time spent with his grandchildren. He was not a man of many words, but when he spoke, people listened. He was wise, steady and strong, and he carried himself in a way that earned respect.
His life was marked by resilience. He was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at a young age, yet he pushed forward and built a successful life and business. After being thrown from a horse and suffering a crushed hip, he was told he might never ride again, but he proved otherwise. When his barn burned and much of what he had built was destroyed, he rebuilt. Time and again, Danny faced hardship head-on and kept going. That was simply who he was.
He is survived by his wife, Donita Kell Hughes; his children, Andrea Dawn Hughes, Jaime Suzanne Lunsford and husband Terry Logan Lunsford, and Jason Hughes and wife Dr. Shana Hughes; and his grandchildren, Karle Ray Carter, Ellie Grace Lunsford, Danielle Logan Lunsford and Otis Hughes. One niece, Ann and Jason Bolin, one nephew Tim and Tishanna Hughes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Ray Hughes and Lillie Frances Redmond Hughes; his brother, Michael Wayne Hughes; and his son, Danny Wayne (Punky) Hughes, who passed away in 2009.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with the funeral to follow, at Bernard Funeral Home in Russell Springs, Kentucky.
Pallbearers will be Kenny Smith, Brent Jones, Todd Claiborne, Clay Roy, Dickie Bryant, and Tim Hughes. Edward Jones will serve as honorary pallbearer.
Danny will be remembered for his quiet wisdom, his grit, his work ethic and the way he kept going through whatever life put in front of him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
